Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky

Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky (1867-1948) was a rabbi and leader of the Jewish community in Jerusalem who spoke out against the creation of the State of Israel to the United Nations:

Known for
Dushinsky was a strong opponent of Zionism and spoke out against the creation of the State of Israel to the United Nations. He pleaded with the UN, “We don’t want this Zionist movement. It’s not religion, it’s not Judaism, they have no right to be here”.

Leadership
Dushinsky was the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem in 1947 when the UN was considering the Partition Plan. He led the Eidah Chareidis community in Yerushalayim and headed the branch of Agudas Yisrael in Yerushalayim for 15 years.

Other accomplishments
Dushinsky founded a community of Hungarian Jews in Jerusalem and a yeshiva. He oversaw changes in the Yishuv, including immigration, the Great Arab Revolt, British Mandatory government policies, World War II, and the Holocaust.

Death
Dushinsky died on October 14, 1948, shortly after the founding of the State of Israel.
